Convicted of multiple counts of felony sexual battery of an institutionalized victim, faces up to 15 years in prison
A former California dental assistant sexually assaulted 13 female patients, he admitted in court on Wednesday.
Luis Ramos’ victims ranged in age from 17 to 63, CBS in San Diego reported. Ramos now faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced in August.
“They’re relieved to have this over,” Deputy District Attorney Martin Doyle told the station, referring to the victims. “A lot of them were scared and frightened to testify, and they’re pleased that Mr. Ramos won’t be out there doing that to someone else.”
The 36-year-old Ramos sexually assaulted the victims as the anesthesia was wearing off after procedures at Park Boulevard Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
Ramos confessed to to sexually touching nine women, and penetrating several of them, according to NBC.
The sexual assaults took place over a one-year period concluding in January, NBC reported.
He worked a the facility for three years. Earlier this year dental surgeon Dr. Steven Podstreleny told NBC that Ramos had been “a stellar employee.”
At least one of the attacks was caught on surveillance cameras. Podstreleny had put the cameras in for “extra layer of protection,” according to the station. Authorities looked at more than 500 hours of surveillance footage.
Ramos was busted for multiple counts of felony sexual battery of an institutionalized victim, NBC reported. Ramos would have faced 17 years in prison if the case went to trial.
“Mr. Ramos didn’t get much of a deal out of our office,” Doyle told CBS. “He wasn’t the kind of defendant that we would bend over backwards to give a deal.”
