The prosecution told the Court that a week before her daughter’s death, Pyke sent two messages to Rytting: “Got a bottle of wine if u wanna share. She can have a blue Smarties and go sleep. Lol! XXX.”
In a subsequent text, Pyke enquired: “Do you wanna share this wine….. Get them blue Smarties ready – the one she likes! Lol XXX”.
Pyke went into graphic sexual detail about what she wanted to do to Rytting if only her daughter had been put in the spare room.
The court heard her mother, a drug addict since the age of 25, referred to her daughter as: “It” “little thief” and “bitch.”

‘Poppy had ingested a variety of drugs for a period of up to six months before her death, including sedatives, heroin, methadone and ketamine. She also had  diazepam, temazepam, oxazepam, codeine and morphine in her hair after suffering a cardiac arrest on Rytting’s sofa’

A neighbour once over heard her saying: “I hate you, you little bastard” and “get your fucking coat on.” Poppy was heard to reply: “Get off ! Don’t hit me. Let go!”
Poppy was born to Pyke while she was addicted to heroin, a year after giving up her first daughter to care.
Prosecutor, David Gordon, told the jury earlier in the trial: “We say Pyke and Rytting, the defendants, are just wanting to get on with their love life, wanting to enjoy each other’s company and it may be this young girl was something of an encumbrance.
“It’s apparent from the text messages that Miss Pyke viewed Poppy as an inconvenience, who she felt was in the way with regards her relationship with Mr Rytting.”

Neighbors overheard Pyke abusing her daughter: “I hate you, you little bastard” and “get your fucking coat on.”

An ambulance was called to Rytting’s home on June 9, 2013, where Poppy was found to be “unresponsive, blue and not breathing,” she died in the hospital the next day.
A post-mortem examination could not establish a cause of death but toxicology tests carried out on her blood and hair found various drugs and showed the young girl had been exposed to and had ingested significant amounts of heroin and methadone for a period of between two and six months before her death.
When police raided Rytting’s filthy apartment they found drugs 770 diazepam tablets near the sofa where Poppy slept. He also had 330 temazepam tablets, valium and three boxes of zolpidem with a post mark of Singapore.

The drugs did not contribute to Poppy’s death but experts agreed there was a “long period of ill-treatment and neglect by the grossly inappropriate administration of various drugs to the child by the defendants”.
Poppy was also found with bruising to her upper arms and backs of legs, and buttocks from punishment on Rytting’s naughty step.
Pyke, who admitted “putting heroin over” her little girl, told the jury she believed Rytting had laced her daughter with drugs which left her mouth blue and constantly thirsty on at least three occasions, four weeks before her death. The prosecutor then asked her why she did not report her supposed suspicions about Rytting, to the authorities

Both defendants pleaded guilty to child cruelty by allowing Poppy to be accommodated in a house where prescribed and controlled drugs were unsecured and within reach of the child.
Pyke, also pleaded guilty to child cruelty by emotional abuse after neighbours heard her shouting at Poppy, threatening her and calling her a “little bastard”.
