Reason behind distraction?: Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, stops to make roadside phone call. Twitter explodes with memes of the event

What was he thinking? Maybe after 30 years cooped up in the office, the 71-year-old ruler needed a breath of fresh air

Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, stops to make roadside phone call, publicized by his own press corps

Twitter explodes with Museveni roadside phone chat meme

Yoweri Museveni4

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, has just pulled off what might be a heck of a maverick and astute political PR stunt or a plain dumb ill advised move to creating trending on socailmedia.
Predictably, social media has gone into speculation overdrive after Yoweri Museveni was photographed talking to a mystery caller from a foldout chair. The photo shows the Ugandan president, chatting on the phone while sitting on a chair on the side of a village road, which has skeptics askingquestions , such as whether the fedora wearing leader was pulling off a cheap publicity stunt to mask imminent unpleasant political manouvers  or  he actually was dealing with urgent matters of state, that could not bear to wait.

Yoweri Museveni3The photo was released by his press officer Don Wanyama who said on Facebook that his 71-year-old boss had stopped his motorcade to make the 30-minute call while returning from World Population Day celebrations in remote western Uganda on Monday.

Yes thanks, I’m sitting comfortably
Yoweri Museveni12

President Museveni was on his way to a public engagement in the south west district of Isingiro when his motorcade ground to a halt, a padded foldout seat appeared and he relaxed into a 30 minute chat.

Or at least that’s what the photo posted on Facebook by his press secretary appeared to suggest, although he does not say why the call had to be made from a roadside chair – with an accompanying desk – but Ugandans have offered their own explanations on Twitter.

It did not take long to reach the consciousness of Ugandans on Twitter (#UOT), who spent the next few hours frantically speculating about who could be on the receiving end of such an important call.

The speculation hasranged from the plusible tothe hilarious. Could it be that he was trying to stop opposition leader Kizza Besigye being released on bail?
The politician, who is Museveni’s most formidable opponent, had been imprisoned for two months on treason charges after he denounced February’s elections as a sham and declared that he was in fact the winner.
Or maybe the photo was a carefully choreographed PR stunt to distract attention from anything Besigye had to say?
Maybe it wasn’t politics but Museveni had experienced one too many connection dropouts and decided that there was no time like the present to fix Uganda’s mobile signal? Or maybe he’d just got round to downloading Drake’s latest album?

As the meme multiplied some Ugandans questioned whether they should be following presidential protocol by finding a outside spot to sit and chat, challenging others to do the same using a hashtag inspired by Museveni’s nickname M7.
Although some attempts seemed more opportunist than others.
Others didn’t seem to care too much about who was on the other end of the call but clearly enjoyed imagining the 71-year-old president, who has been in office since 1986, in alternative surroundings.

Some folks have been wondering who dreamt up this obvious set up, like who brought the chair, for starters?

And as the meme merry-go-round continues, it remains unclear who provided the chair.

Rodrigo Duterte set to become next Phillipines president as nearest rival concedes election

With 89% of the votes in nearest rival Grace Poe concedes on Monday night

The handicap

The Philippine economy has steadily grown since the early 2000s, earning credit ratings upgrades, with spending power fueled by money sent home by an army of overseas workers.
On the political and diplomatic front, the government has been feted for standing up to China over a row in the South China Sea.
Ramon Casiple, a political analyst and head of the Institute for Political and Electoral Reform, said Duterte is “a protest vote.”
“He is a symbol for the people. Nothing happened for many people in the past six years, and he has capitalized on his image as the folk hero here,” Casiple said.
Allegations of cheating were rampant around Manila and its southern suburbs.
One woman voter, who declined to be identified, said people representing themselves as allied to a certain politician offered her up to 3,000 pesos ($64) for a vote.
“I declined politely but I know of some who took the money. They were supposed to report back (to the people who offered the bribe) to collect the money,” the woman said.
Scattered incidents of election-related violence caused five deaths in the southern province of Maguindanao, the Army’s Sixth Infantry Division told the country’s state-run Philippine News Agency.
Capt. Jo-Anne Petinglay said the polling remained generally peaceful and civilian casualties were low compared with past elections in the province.

Mugabe must go!: Zimbabweans take to the streets

…Rare mass protest against Robert Mugabe’s 3-decade rule’

“Old clueless Mugabe must go.”
“Where is our $15bn dollars?”

Demonstration organized by opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai is biggest in years as Zimbabwe’s economic problems worsen

Joice Mujuru, Zimbabwe’s former vice-president, launched
a new party last month to challenge Robert Mugabe, promising
to revive the economy and repair strained relations with the west.

Police had initially banned Thursday’s march before a court overturned the ban. The opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, who shared power with Mugabe for five years before losing disputed elections in 2013, organist the march.
Women with children strapped to their backs joined marchers carrying placards demanding that Mugabe step down. He has been in power since independence from white minority rule in 1980.
Some marchers carried banners reading “Old clueless Mugabe must go”. “Where is our $15bn dollars?” read one placard, in reference to recent statements by Mugabe that $15bn worth of diamonds had been looted in eastern Zimbabwe.

Another placard read “Where are our 2.2m jobs?” referring to Mugabe’s 2013 election pledge to create jobs. Zimbabwe is battling a worsening economic decline, highlighted by company closures and growing unemployment.
Mugabe has previously said he wouldn’t resign, adding that he would rule “until God says come”.

Cameron Tax dodge -Panama Papers

GETTY/PA
David Cameron defended his investments in the House of Commons
The Prime Minister admitted he has been referred to the standards watchdog by Labour but defended his investments as “entirely standard practice”.

But Jeremy Corbyn called the Prime Minister’s statement a “masterclass in the art of distraction” and claimed the scandal proves there is “one rule for the super-rich and another for everyone else”.
The Labour leader also called on the Conservatives to back a full public inquiry into the international tax system, accusing the Tories of being “incapable of taking serious internationally co-ordinated action to tackle tax dodging”.

He added: “What they have driven home is what many people have increasingly felt – there is now one rule for the super-rich and another for the rest”
“I’m honestly not sure that the Prime Minister fully appreciates the anger that is out there over this injustice.”
But Cameron tried to fight back today, saying: “There have been some deeply hurtful and profoundly untrue allegations made against my father.
“Allow me to put the record straight.
“This investment fund was set off overseas in the first place because it was going to be trading predominantly in dollar securities.”

He did admit full responsibility for taking nearly a week to admit his role.
And he has announced three new rules to open up tax havens – there will be a new criminal offence for tax evasion, there will be a task force to crack down on it and UK law enforcement will be able to name people benefitting from firms in tax havens.
Labour leader Corbyn has published his tax return for the last financial year, showing that he declared £1,850 of additional income beyond his Parliamentary salary.
And Chancellor George Osborne has also published his tax figures as pressure mounted on MPs to come clean about their personal finances.
The details showed a total taxable income of £198,738, including £44,647 in the form of dividends and rental income of £33,562.

The Prime Minister has been in hot water over his tax affairs and treatment of tax avoidance – sparking mass protests and calls for him to resign.
Last week, Mr Cameron admitted he owned 5,000 units in Blairmore Investment Trust – a fund set up by his late father Ian.
He added that he sold them for £30,000 before becoming Prime Minister.
In an interview with ITV News, Mr Cameron said: “We owned 5,000 units in Blairmore Investment Trust, which we sold in January 2010. That was worth something like £30,000.
“I paid income tax on the dividends. There was a profit on it but it was less than the capital gains tax allowance so I didn’t pay capital gains tax. But it was subject to all the UK taxes in all the normal way.
“I want to be as clear as I can about the past, about the present, about the future, because frankly I don’t have anything to hide.”

Putin ‘Expert’ -Vladimir Putin has secret army ‘battle groups’ to combact in Western Europe

‘This means the Kremlin leader and ex-Intelligence Chief Putin has direct access to an elite fighter network in the West,’ said popular German daily newspaper BILD ahead of the book’s publication on Friday this week.

‘I have seen intelligence reports on the groups’

Extraordinary claims made by Putin expert and biographer Boris Reitschuster

Putin is accused of forming secret ‘battle groups’ in western countries
Army of sleeper agents are trained in martial arts and knife fighting

CLAIMS: Self-defence schools in Germany “act as camouflage for secret meetings”
Russian leader Vladimir Putin is accused of forming secret ‘battle groups’ in western countries including Germany ready to activate at a moment’s notice.
Putin expert and biographer Boris Reitschuster claims in his new book ‘Putin’s Hidden War’ that this army of sleepers is trained in the Russian ‘Systema’ techniques of martial arts and knife fighting as taught to his country’s special forces units.
German author Reitschuster claims to have seen the reports of a western European intelligence service detailing the covert groups spread across the continent.
Reitschuster says the commanders of this secret army are drawn from GRU military intelligence and elite WDW airborn troops, adding; ‘This fighting force in enemy territory is a mainstay in Putin’s hidden war against the West.’
Earlier this year German intelligence agencies warned of Putin’s plan to destabilize the country through propaganda.
Now Reitschuster says the intelligence he has seen suggests the new goals are fomenting civil unrest, distorting democratic political processes and ‘conveying non-democratic ideals.’

In January the intelligence services said the Kremlin was behind a false report of a 13-year-old Russian girl called Lisa who claimed she was raped in Berlin.

Earlier this year German intelligence agencies warned of Putin’s plan to destabilize the country through propaganda
Later she admitted she made the story up – but not before ex-pat Russians had taken to the streets and even protested outside Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office.
Russian Systema self-defence schools in Germany act as ‘camouflage for agent meetings,’ according to Reitschuster and ‘are centres for recruiting new Kremlin fighters.’
The author claims European intelligence services have identified about 300 men in the previous year Germany who are actively involved in the Systema structures. Among those who have received special training in Moscow are also soldiers, policemen, judicial employees and turncoat members of the German police and elite forces GSG 9 and KSK who are ‘known’ to the security services.

‘These saboteurs with elite education are no negligible factor – they are targeted for crisis situations and trained to trigger unrest after assessing intelligence documents,’ he added.
The Russian paramilitaries, he claimed, now hold ‘real manouvres in the Swiss mountains, operate across borders and are particularly strong in Czech Republic where they mostly exercise.’
Reitschuster says the recruits, who can be activated at a moment’s notice, all receive Russian passports and receive training in sabotage and handling explosives.

Horrific !! Muslim woman is mown down by grinning far-right activist who then stops to take a PICTURE during anti-Islam rally in the troubled Brussels district of Molenbeek

Photo: Reuters

It came during a banned anti-Islam rally in the troubled district of Brussels
As the driver continued, passenger appeared to lean out and take a photo

Shocking footage has emerged of a Muslim woman being mown down by a car in a hit-and-run during an anti-Islam rally in the Brussels district of Molenbeek.

Video footage of the incident shows the car, which had ploughed through a police road block, driving head-on into the woman as she crossed the road.
The woman was thrown off the car’s bonnet and skidded along the road, while the driver continued moving forward and appeared to run over her legs.
The passenger even appears to lean out of the window to take a photo after breaking through the police barricade.
Although seriously injured, the woman appeared to be conscious to receive treatment at the scene of the crash.
Police haven’t yet confirmed the woman’s current condition, or the motivation behind the crash.
It came as tensions escalated in the Belgian capital, with police out in force to ward off trouble after local authorities banned the scheduled anti-Islam rally and any counter-protests.
Several hundred people attempted to gather in defiance of the ban in the troubled neighborhood of Molenbeek, which has become known as the ‘jihadi capital of Europe’ after it emerged that a number of the Brussels and Paris terror attackers had connections with the district.
Meanwhile smaller far-left groups were dispersed from a central Brussels square that has become a memorial to the victims of the airport and metro attacks of March 22.
Police said they briefly detained over 100 people but only two were kept in custody, as calm returned to the district this evening.
Authorities were determined to prevent a repeat of last weekend, when riot police fired water cannon to disperse far-right football hooligans who disrupted mourners at the makeshift shrine to the attack victims.

The sole surviving Paris suspect, Salah Abdeslam, was arrested in Molenbeek on March 18, after four months on the run as Europe’s most wanted man.
He denies having any prior knowledge of the Brussels attacks.
It comes as authorities announced that Brussels’ Zaventem airport will partially reopen on Sunday, just 12 days after it was hit by twin ISIS suicide blasts.
The first three ‘symbolic flights’ will take off for Faro, Turin and Athens from Sunday afternoon, Brussels Airport chief executive Arnaud Feist told reporters, and travellers will have to undergo strict new security controls before check-in.
‘These flights are the first hopeful sign from an airport that is standing up straight after a cowardly attack,’ Mr Feist said.
Passengers will have to make use of a temporary check-in facility as the airport’s departure hall was wrecked in the March 22 blasts that also struck a metro station in Brussels, killing 32 people.
